The Evening I Was Supposed to Get Back

I had already spent part of Sunday catching up on the RNP website. There were journal entries I had forgotten to create, poems I had forgotten to upload, and audio conversations that were still waiting to be finished. By evening, most of that work was finally done. The only thing left was ordinary life: laundry, a shower, water, food, maybe a game, maybe a little quiet.

I was not okay. I knew that. I was sad while I was talking. I wanted to laugh the way I had been laughing during the Federal IT journals, DAMN-IT Tower, Batdork, Alfredo, and all the ridiculous things that had made the last few days lighter. But I could not force that feeling back. The sadness was there, and a lot of it came from Pinky and from the same relationship problems repeating themselves again.

I am not okay. But I am not going to let being not okay make my day not okay.

That sentence became the anchor for the night. I still had a life to live after the argument. I still had laundry. I still had a shower to take. I still had a body to feed. I was already around 101 grams of protein before logging my supplement, and I knew the calorie number was incomplete because I had eaten pie. Even in the middle of all this emotional noise, ordinary responsibilities were still waiting for me.

What the Argument Was Actually About

The center of the argument was money and boundaries. My position was not that I do not care about Savannah. I do care about Savannah, and I am willing to help her. My position was that money intended for Savannah should be used for Savannah, and money I provide for Pinky, Sabrina, household needs, school needs, or our future should not quietly become money for other relatives and then become my responsibility to replace.

This was not a brand-new suspicion created on August 16. The subject had come up before. The issue of Pinky's mother asking for money, money moving through the family, and my concern about whether I was expected to keep replenishing what other people used had already been part of earlier relationship conflicts. That history is important because today's argument did not happen in a vacuum.

My boundary was simple: I decide what I give, how much I give, what I can afford, and what purpose I am supporting. Helping Savannah does not mean becoming an unlimited financial resource for everyone around her. If another source of money is spent however someone else chooses, that does not automatically make me responsible for filling the gap.

Correction to the Record

Important Transcript Correction

During the argument, it was Romeo's mother who was calling him through Messenger. Pinky was encouraging Romeo to answer or call his own mother. Romeo was refusing because he was angry and did not want to speak to his mother in that state. Romeo was not pressuring Pinky to call her mother. Pinky's mother was discussed separately as part of the financial boundary: Romeo did not want money he provided, or money intended for Savannah, redirected to Pinky's mother or other relatives.

This correction matters because an earlier summary accidentally reversed the situation and made it sound as though I was forcing Pinky to speak with her mother while she wanted space. That did not happen. The raw transcript and my own clarification show the opposite: my mother was calling me, and I was the person choosing not to take that conversation while I was too angry to speak respectfully.

Where I Believe I Was Right

Tonight, my conclusion is that I was right about the underlying financial issue. I was right to say that I do not want money I provide redirected to Pinky's mother or other family members without my agreement. I was right to say that money allocated for Savannah should be protected for Savannah. I was right to refuse the idea that I must automatically replenish money simply because it ran out somewhere else.

There is a difference between being imperfect during an argument and being wrong about the thing the argument is about. If I kept talking longer than I should have after Pinky wanted to sleep, that is a question about how the argument was handled. It does not transform the financial boundary into a bad boundary. It does not erase the history that led to the concern. It does not make me the cause of the original problem.

Do not turn the traffic ticket into the robbery.

That became the clearest way to describe what frustrated me about the analysis. I did not want one smaller criticism of my conduct to become the headline while the actual problem disappeared from the story.

What Pinky Did That I Will Not Normalize

The part I cannot keep accepting is the way conflict becomes personal. I am not talking about ordinary disagreement. I am talking about insults, belittling, questioning my intelligence, questioning my manhood or maturity, minimizing what I contribute, and bringing separation or leaving into an argument as though the relationship itself can be placed on the chopping block whenever things become difficult.

That is not the kind of relationship conduct I want to live with. I can be corrected. I can be told I am wrong. I can own a mistake. But accountability is not humiliation, and disagreement is not permission to treat me with contempt.

The issue with Joey made that even more serious for me. Joey is my son. I will support my son. If I am expected to care about Savannah - which I do - then I cannot accept a double standard in which supporting Joey somehow becomes objectionable. My children do not become less important because I am in another relationship.

The Door

This is the line I am drawing tonight: if Pinky again threatens to leave, says she is ending the relationship, or walks toward the door as a way of handling conflict, I am not going to keep chasing her and bending myself backward to stop her.

If she chooses the door, I will not hold it closed for her.

That does not mean I am choosing the breakup. It means I am refusing to keep purchasing the continuation of the relationship with my dignity, my boundaries, my finances, or my peace. If she genuinely chooses to leave, that decision belongs to her. I am done treating every threat of separation as an emergency that requires me to surrender whatever line I was trying to hold.

Why I Keep the Journal

This is exactly why I keep records. Time changes memory. Grief changes memory. Love changes memory. Guilt can rewrite an entire history after the fact. I do not want future Romeo to wake up months or years from now and decide that everything would have been saved if only I had surrendered one more boundary, apologized for one more thing that was not mine, or chased one more time.

And if Sabrina someday wonders why her father is not present in the way everyone once expected, I do not want the story reduced to Dad walked away. I want the record to show what I chose, what Pinky chose, what was said, what boundaries existed, and what actually happened. I do not want either side cleaned up for history. I want the truth preserved.

I even found myself thinking about Jasmine. What happened there hurt deeply, but it was direct. She left for another man, and as painful as that truth was, I remember it as something I could understand. Tonight I found myself thinking that a direct wound can feel easier to carry than being repeatedly minimized, belittled, or pulled through the same unstable cycle.

No False Guilt

I am not going to walk away from this relationship carrying guilt for a decision I did not make. I did my best. I sacrificed. I provided. I tried to protect the relationship, the finances, the children, and the future I believed we were building. That does not make every sentence I ever spoke perfect, and it does not mean I never made mistakes. It means I am not going to confuse mistakes with ownership of the entire collapse.

I can own what is mine. I will not carry what is hers.

When I said I would not leave with blood on my hands, I was talking about guilt. I will not take responsibility for wounds I did not cause or for a breakup I did not choose. If Pinky decides that my financial boundaries, my responsibility to my children, or my refusal to accept contempt are reasons to leave, then that choice is hers to own.

My hands do not have to carry everything simply because I loved her.

Closing

Tonight did not end with laughter. It ended with me trying to put the truth in the right box before pain could distort it. I was angry at Pinky. I was exhausted by the pattern. I was also angry that even the first attempt to reflect the argument somehow kept turning the spotlight back onto me until the original issue nearly disappeared.

The correction is now part of the record. The earlier history is part of the record. The financial boundary is part of the record. Pinky's conduct during the argument is part of the record. My own words and my own decisions are part of the record too.

If the relationship survives, let the record help us remember what must change. If it ends, let the record keep me from inventing guilt that does not belong to me.

For tonight, I am done arguing. The laundry still needs to be done. I still need a shower. I still need water. Life is still waiting outside the argument, and I intend to go back to it.
